reMarkable Paper Pro — Field Guide All sections ↗

First-Time Setup and Account Onboarding

The reMarkable Paper Pro ships partially charged and boots directly into an on-device setup assistant that walks through hardware preparation, network configuration, account linking, and a firmware update. The full sequence takes roughly forty minutes, most of it spent waiting on charge and the initial OS install rather than on active input. Completing every step in order—rather than skipping Wi-Fi or deferring the update—ensures cloud sync, backups, and the latest handwriting and gesture features are available from the first session. This section covers the onboarding path for the full-size Paper Pro and flags where the smaller Paper Pro Move differs.

Unboxing and Charging

The device arrives ready to power on. A full charge before the first extended session is recommended but not mandatory for setup.

  1. Remove the tablet and Marker from the packaging.
  2. Connect the included USB-C cable to the tablet and a power source.
  3. Press the power button to launch the on-device setup assistant.
  4. Allow the e-paper (Canvas Color) screen to complete its first full refresh. This is normal behavior that keeps the display clean and sharp.

For long-term battery health, avoid routinely draining the battery to empty and charge fully before the first heavy use. Typical battery life is up to about two weeks depending on usage.

Pairing and Docking the Marker

The Marker (or Marker Plus) requires no separate pairing procedure—it attaches magnetically and charges wirelessly while docked.

  1. Align the Marker with the magnetic strip on the right edge of the Paper Pro.
  2. Let it snap into place; wireless charging begins automatically while attached.
  3. Keep the Marker docked or stored in a folio when transporting the device.

Note the variant difference: the full-size Paper Pro docks the Marker on the right edge, while the Paper Pro Move docks it on the top-right edge.

Wi-Fi and Account Creation

Connecting to Wi-Fi during onboarding is strongly advised. Skipping it blocks cloud sync, file backup, and the firmware update.

  1. In the setup assistant, select an available Wi-Fi network and enter the password if prompted.
  2. Choose an account path:
  1. Confirm the account link. This connects notebooks across devices and enables remote sync and cloud backup.

Installing the Initial OS Update

The Paper Pro typically prompts for a reMarkable OS update during onboarding. Updates improve latency and battery performance.

  1. Accept the update when prompted.
  2. Keep the device on power and connected to Wi-Fi until the install completes.
  3. Do not change settings or begin writing until the update finishes and the device restarts.

reMarkable rolls updates out in stages, so a specific device may not immediately receive the newest release. Once running a recent build (OS 3.15 or later), the device includes an onboarding notebook with guided tasks for exploring core features.

Gestures and Marker Tip Care

There is no user-facing handwriting "calibration" wizard. The Marker and palm rejection are factory-calibrated; what new users perform is the onboarding tutorial plus learning the gesture set—not a calibration step.

Core gestures to practice:

Marker tip maintenance:

  1. Inspect the tip when writing feels dull or scratchy; tips wear gradually before failing.
  2. Pull the worn tip straight out with fingers, tweezers, or a tip-removal tool.
  3. Press a new tip in firmly until it seats. Expect roughly two to four months per tip for a typical daily user.

Use only reMarkable tips—they use a carbon-filled design custom-made for the Marker and Canvas Color display; third-party tips are unsupported. Keep the Marker dry, protect it from drops and bending, and never dry it with an external heat source such as a hairdryer or microwave. If the device becomes unresponsive during setup, perform a soft reset by holding the power button for about 10–15 seconds until the reMarkable logo appears.
